About Us - The History of BigMazes.com
The idea behind BigMazes.com was originally born back in 2004, when I made a maze for my kids. In short, they loved solving it, and I enjoyed making it. Always "thinking big," soon after making this first maze, I got the idea to make a very large one. I jumped right in and began building, but soon realized that making a huge maze would also be a huge undertaking. After spending hours to complete just 1% of the maze's total area, I decided that I just couldn't tackle a project so time-consuming. So I hopped online to see if I could find one to buy.
My search for large mazes for sale was fruitless—there weren't any...anyplace. I decided that If I wanted one, I really would have to make it myself. Maybe it wouldn't take as much time as I thought, was my rationale. I started again where I'd left off and designed about 5% of this big maze, planning on it being 36" x 72" when it was all done. It didn't take long before I realized that I was doing it all wrong, and that my maze was going to be easy and boring (keep in mind, I had no real "experience" making mazes—who knew that there was a science to it?).
Not wanting to scrap what I'd done and start over, but not wanting to start over, the monster maze project was tabled. It took five years for the "maze bug" to return, but when it did, it came back strong! I began work en serio on our first huge maze—The Scrambler—in November 2009. Scrapping what I'd already designed years ago I set out with a more clear vision of what this monster maze should be. Even still, building such a large maze was a learning process, and modifications to design took place at intervals during the creative process. It was a long, tedious process, and it was often tabled for weeks at a time before it was finally complete.
