Tips on How to Solve a Big Maze

June 27, 2011 - Solving a big maze can be a challenge. Here are some tips to remember as you attempt to solve one.

  1. Remember that the maze does have a solution!
  2. The maze won't change as you work on it, so finishing a maze is really just a process of elimination—ruling out dead-ends as you encounter them.
  3. Be careful not to "wall hop." That is,be sure that when you are following a path you don't let your eye "hop" the wall to a neighboring path. Doing so could make you rule out the right path (should you happen to be on it), or conclude that a wrong path is the right one. Marking your path as you work through a maze will help you avoid wall hopping.
  4. Use a system. By this we mean that you use a pattern in investigating and marking paths. For example, your system could be to investigate paths counter-clockwise. When using this system, upon arriving at an intersection with two or three options, you would always take the first path in a counter-clockwise direction, doing so until each path is eliminated or not.
  5. Be patient. It takes us a long time to make a good, big maze. It will take you some time to finish it, unless you are lucky enough to choose the right path at each opportunity! But don't hold your breath for that!
  6. Be persistent. Our large-format mazes will likely require some determination on your part. Again, it took persistence on our end to build them, so you should expect the same!

Good luck and happy mazing!
